Task Groups

Types of task groups include focus groups, trigger groups, quality improvement groups, and social action groups, among others. They can be formed internally to address an agency problem, or they can be formed across organizations and entities, as with a community coalition or delegation. They can be as small as a couple of members or as large as hundreds of contributing representatives, and be formal or informal in structure and process. With these variations come advantages and disadvantages and the activation of different leadership skills and techniques for the group leader.

In this Discussion, you imagine yourself in the role of a social worker forming a task group among many agencies. You must determine the most appropriate task group type and procedures for the given purpose, as well as the most effective steps for implementation and governance.

To Prepare

  • Review the Learning Resources on task groups.
  • Carefully read the scenario below and then consider the following questions: Which type of task group would you propose? What steps would you take to initiate and lead it?
    • You are a social worker in a private, nonprofit agency that serves immigrants, primarily migrant workers and their families. The agency includes two social workers, the director, and a retired attorney who helps with referrals to lawyers who can provide pro bono legal services. The social workers link immigrants to various social, economic, and health resources within the border community.
    • Coordination between these various resources (some of which overlap) is limited and creates challenges in providing the most efficient and timely assistance to immigrants. To address these issues, your agency has asked you to organize a task group made up of representatives from different local organizations that provide health and social services to immigrants (three food banks, a federally qualified health center, volunteer interpreters, educational assistance, housing assistance, an employment agency, and churches that provide financial assistance).

SUBMIT

Post your understanding of the different types of task groups social workers may facilitate. Choose one type of task group model (from Chapter 12) and explain why it best addresses the issue of resource coordination among agencies. Analyze the potential advantages and disadvantages of using this type of task group for the scenario. Explain, step-by-step, how you would implement the task group according to the model you chose.

Resources

Respond to at least two colleagues who chose a different task group model. Provide respectful feedback on their steps for implementation. Identify another advantage or disadvantage of the type of task group. Then, explain how leadership of this task group may differ from leadership of a treatment group.

Use the Learning Resources to support your posts. Make sure to provide APA citations and a reference list.
