Introduction

This final report assignment offers you an opportunity to explore physics concepts and their impact on your personal life, or their potential effects. By focusing on topics that interest you, this assignment aims to deepen your understanding of physics while making learning personally relevant and engaging.

This report is very similar to your previous reports, but with a even more freedom/flexibility to write how you want. It is not as structured and thus is more about observing and describing physics phenomena. Additionally I will accept this a couple days later than normal- so you have the chance to investigate special/general relativity, or even cosmology (next week).

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply physics concepts from the last ~5 weeks of our course to real-world scenarios encountered in daily life.
    • I understand that some of these topics do not necessarily have a direct effect on your daily life. If you choose to write about those you can do so in more of a research report style.
    • Alternatively you can apply the physics we’ve learned to various pieces of media. You can review this week’s discussion section for inspiration if needed.
  • Enhance critical thinking and analytical skills through the exploration of personal interests.
  • Develop communication skills by expressing ideas in various formats.

Assignment Directions

Physics Scenario

Select a physics topic (or several) from the below list that resonates with you, your personal experiences, or your interests. This can include quantum/nuclear/relativity/cosmology events from your favorite media if desired. The goal of this report will be to either explore how this concept affects your day-to-day life, or to do some research on a topic if it is one you find interesting but it doesn’t affect your daily life (such as general relativity).

Potential Topics:

  • Wave/particle duality
  • Photon emission/absorption
  • Light sources, color, and energy of light
  • Reflection and mirrors
  • Refraction and lenses
  • Interference
  • Polarization
  • Quantum atomic model
  • Nuclear radiation
  • Special and General Relativity

Content Sections

      • Describe the scenario:
        • What are you observing/experiencing?
        • What object(s) in your experience uses the chosen topic(s)?
        • Which topics are relevant to the last ~month of physics?
      • Explain why you selected this topic and how it impacts your life:
        • Do you use it regularly? Why and how? If not, then why did you pick this topic?
        • Again, if doing a research style report, you can discuss in more detail why you have picked this topic.
      • Application of current physics concepts:
        • Discuss how the chosen physics topic applies to your experience.
        • Describe the object/experience in the physics terms we have used and developed over the course of this semester.
        • Explore any additional related concepts to enrich your report.
      • Expansion upon previous physics concepts:
        • Everything we have dealt with in the last ~5 weeks of class has been built upon previous physics:
          • What physics concepts did we learn earlier in this semester in order to build up to the ones you discussed in this report?
          • Why and how was that build up necessary/important?
          • How were these older physics concepts adapted into the present ones?

            Format Options

          • Video Presentation: A 3-5 minute video explaining your scenario. A video can be especially useful if you capture a recording of the motion scenario and freeze frame when discussing certain aspects of it. You can also always draw on those freeze frames for clarity.
            • In this case it could also be useful if you are discussing something primarily observed in sci-fi movies by including a clip.
          • Poster or Infographic: Visually represent your scenario with key points. Much like the written report, each of the listed content sections should have their own section in your poster.
          • Digital Animation: If you are interested in creating a digital animation then go for it! While this would operate much like a video presentation, there will not be a minimum time requirement as these take a lot of time to produce.
          • Interview with an Expert: This could be built in to a video presentation or an audio-only response.
