Option 1:
- Pick a short to medium-sized paragraph from Mike Davis’ “Fortress Los Angeles: The Militarization of Urban Space”.
- Pick a type of publications (journal, newspaper, podcast, graphic novel, blog, X post, advertisement, etc)
- Re-imagine and re-write Davis’ paragraph for the publications you selected. You’ll want to maintain the content of the claim, example, and analysis, but you’ll need to modify the format, syntax, and vocabulary to fit each type of publication.
- Post the original paragraph along with your re-imagining. Do not identify the publication.
- Next, (still without naming the publication) explain why you made the syntax and diction choices in your re-imagining for that particular publication/audience.
Option 2: This option asks you to use an LLM of your choice to generate the re-imagined text. Because some might have objections to signing up for an LLM account (or have just never used one before), this is not required but is only an option.
- Pick a short to medium-sized paragraph from Mike Davis’ “Fortress Los Angeles: The Militarization of Urban Space”.
- Copy the paragraph into an LLM with instructions to rewrite it in the style of the publication of your choice. Be sure to instruct the LLM to maintain the content of the claim, example, and analysis, but you’ll need to modify the format, syntax, and vocabulary to fit each type of publication.
- After posting the original paragraph and the LLMs rewriting of it, provide analysis of what the LLM changed and to what effect (without disclosing your chosen publication type).
- How has the diction, vocabulary and syntax been altered?
- What has been lost in the translation to the new version?
- What does the LLM reimagining reveal about the original passage written by Davis that might not have been apparent before?
