The purpose of this assignment is to identify a good piece of writing for children (Prek-12) that addresses a topic of diversity. Select a fiction or nonfiction book on any aspect of diversity (linguistic, racial, ethnic, religious, economic, gender, sexual preference, regional, abilities, etc.) that could be used with students to teach them about or introduce them to the topic. The book should be one that is too good to miss.
This is the book and author I have selected for this assignment.
Selected Book: Persepolis
Author: Marjane Satrapi
(The book explores important themes such as cultural identity, gender roles, education, freedom of expression, family relationships, migration, and cross-cultural adaptation. It also provides insight into the emotional and psychological effects of political instability on children and adolescents).
Requirements
Prepare a two-page report on your chosen book. Organize your information using the following template:
- (include a small picture of the book cover; if you find the book cover online, you can copy and import the picture into your document)
- REFERENCE in APA style
- BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF THE BOOK:
Tell the main points of the book in your own words. Do not cut and paste from Amazon, please. Be brief; you do not need to recount every detail in the book. Also discuss age and/or grade level appropriateness in terms of reading ability, interest level, and appropriateness of topic.
DEVELOPING AWARENESS:
In a well-written paragraph, explain why and how this book develops awareness of diversity and/or related issues. Diversity can relate to: religion, race, language, sexual orientation, gender, age, geographic region, physical and mental ability, as well as other areas. Explain how you would develop the topic with students in your class.
Web Link:
Provide the URL and a brief description of a web site that would be appropriate to use when teaching with the book. Describe how you could incorporate the web site when teaching with the book. The web site does not have to be specifically about the book (it could, but does not have to be). However, the web site you select must address the diversity topic of focus; avoid web sites that broadly discuss diversity. The web site could be for the teachers use, the students use, or both.
