Using the chapter in the book, write a paragraph in no less than 100 words about your understanding of the following quote below. Make sure to indicate in your response how this quote relates to title of the chapter.

Therefore, if you would understand him, listen not to what he says but rather to what he does not say,” by Kahlil Gibran is really rather deep. In the beginning of Chapter 5 it states that “Communication has been described as the process of conveying feelings, attitudes, facts, beliefs, and ideas between individuals, either verbally or non-verbally,” (Becoming Aware, 302); which is in fact the definition of Interpersonal Communication, directly tying this quote to the title of Chapter 5: Interpersonal Communication. In my opinion, there is so much to be said for the things that we do not portray to others with our words, the things that we hold inside. Take social media for instance, where we display our lives for everyone to view and discuss, but we only share the things we are proud of, the things we do not mind others seeing. This quote is referring to that same idea. The idea that we share what we are comfortable sharing; but what we do not share is often the biggest part of our true selves. When Gibran says ‘if you would understand him, listen to not what he says but rather what he does not say’ he is conveying the idea that so much is said in nonverbal communication, sometimes more than what is said with our words. Often our true self, our real self is the inner most parts of ourselves which we keep tucked away, only visible to those who know how to listen to nonverbal cues.

This quote relates to the title of the chapter, “Interpersonal Communication,” because it’s all about communication. The chapter tells us that communication can be nonverbal, things like facial expressions, body language, etc. These things can tell you more about a person than the words they say. If someone is saying something to you, and their body language or facial expressions are saying something different, their true emotions are more likely to be the nonverbal expressions.

It also connects to active listening in lectures, where we should not just copy notes, but try to understand the main ideas, tone, and deeper meaning. For me, this shows that being a good student means going beyond the obvious, paying attention to details, and making thoughtful connections to better understand both people and information.
