Educational leaders are often responsible for employee selection, training, and discipline, which requires them to maintain a strong grasp of the law related to these functions. In addition, leaders must be able to help educate other team members who may be involved in these functions. This assignment is designed to help you become more familiar with pertinent employment law and to engage you in the practice of training others in this area.

Assume the role of an educational leader within your organization. You have been tasked with developing a presentation for your fellow administrators related to potential legal issues and recommendations for avoiding legal pitfalls. 

Your presentation topic must focus on one of the following:

Summarize the related case law and statutory law. Ask yourself, "What federal or state statutory laws govern my chosen topic? What landmark cases have shaped the practices associated with my chosen topic?" Then discuss these laws and cases (as an overview).  Discuss the legalities that regulate the rights and responsibilities of educators and students (aligned with your topic of employee recruitment or discipline). Ask yourself, "What legal rights and responsibilities must leaders/administrators practice in regard to my chosen topic? What legal rights and responsibilities might an employee have regarding my chosen topic? What legal rights and responsibilities do leaders have to students regarding this matter? Then discuss these rights and responsibilities succinctly, yet scholarly.  Outline the current legal pitfalls associated with your selected topic. Ask yourself, "As leaders/supervisors/administrators, what are key legal pitfalls we must avoid regarding my chosen topic?" Then discuss these pitfalls (as an overview).  Recommend strategies to help employees avoid these common legal pitfalls. Ask yourself, "Based on the pitfalls I have mentioned, what recommendations could I offer to my peers (other leaders/administrators/supervisors) for best practices regarding my chosen topic?” Then discuss these recommendations (as an overview).
